concept - work sofa

concept - work sofa

This interesting multi-function chair concept was spotted today on Unplggd. This two seater has arms that fold over to make small lap desks for your laptop or netbook computer. Or the whole thing can be folded down into a big ottoman or the cushions stored in which case its a large low table.

Its a very interesting concept piece, no doubt. Something is unresolved with the arms however. They are shown folding up into the base, but they clearly are changing shape from a 90deg bend to a 180deg bend in the two positions. Thats going to take some kind of unknown material to pull off. I'm not sure of the reason for this discrepancy, but I believe with a design concept like this it takes a back seat to the other compelling functions it suggests.

  1. Yeah, those arms were confusing me, too. But I think they do work, and I see how they did it.
If you look closely at the bottom picture, you can see that the ends of the folded-up arms don't align with the bottom of the loop; instead, they're a bit above it. That indicates that the second (lower) half of the 180deg bend is not a round bend but a sharp one, which can be obtained by simple hinging in some fashion. And you can see a faint material break at the outer end of the 90deg bend where such a hinge would go. Getting them to latch securely in both positions without visible latches will be /will have been tricky, though.

  2. You know, I made that same observation and considered a hinge in the arm to accomplish this - but the hinge for this manner of folding away would mean that the horizontal portion of the arm would want to fold down - so it would not stay in place when in the arm position without some sort of hardware latch. Given that the arm is already hinged for the work surface, this second hinge line would cut through both parts, meaning the flip over work surface would have a second hinge line cutting through it. I suppose it cold be done, but I think its becoming kind of tenuous at this point.
