broder shelving, ikea

Ikea Broderbr/>

workalicious reader nothingfuture posted a comment about this great shelving system from Ikea:

IKEA makes a shelving line called "Broder" that is nicely priced, flexible in setup, and even has the same industrial finish. It's not perfect, but for very few dollars I now have an excellent desk.

Indeed this very affordable shelf system from Ikea can be the basis for your vertical desk set up.

Ikea Broder

Its a conventional slotted shelf standard system, but it comes in freestanding or wall mounted configurations, and Ikea has a great range of accessories, many which you can hang on this slotted back panel:

Ikea Broder

Desk tops are available in steel, or wood.

Ikea Broder
Ikea Broder

Similar to the E-Z Shelving system brackets the triangular shape will interfere with your ability to roll your mobile desk under the desktop shelf. I think with a little modification this can easily be overcome.

Ikea Broder

So there it is, by far the least expensive path to a shelf system for your vertical desk.

Propeller Media Works

Flickr user rvrzl has several photos of his workplace posted to his account. He writes:

the company is propeller media works, out of burlington vermont. the owner is david gibson. i'm a design/front end developer.

The office is clearly in an old industrial structure and has great light, great brick, great posts, beams, and planks!

Propeller Media Works

Propeller Media Works

Their office furniture looks to be a mix of ordinary panel workstations. What is interesting here is that the panels are still arranged to create an open office environment. Are you saddled with an old panel system? Well it does not mean that you can't reconfigure to transform the environment.

Propeller Media Works

i know it used to be a yoga studio. originally the 2nd room with the art in it was the office, then the yoga people moved out and we bought the yoga studio and combined them.

you'll also notice a spiral staircase in the room with the art in it. that goes downstairs to an office area and a game room, with a door that leads out into the crazy underbelly of the old factory building with a lot of really sick old architecture including a crazy boiler room with a ridiculously crazy smoke stack.

Make sure to stop by the Propeller site and take the Studio Tour.

e-z shelving systems

E-Z Shelving System

At the heart of creating a good vertical desk set up is strong cantilever shelving. The shelves have to support a lot of weight, and you don't want them to feel bouncy or sag over time. Cantilever is a must because you need to be able to move your desk under the computer shelf freely. When we set up our own we looked at a lot of different products, but the best one for the money was by far E-Z Shelving Systems of Kansas. There are several other systems that can do the job, but cost way more than E-Z's utilitarian product.

E-Z Shelving System

E-Z Shelving is essentially an industrial shelving system, a robust cantilever structure that was intended to offer more utility by eliminating the posts that get in the way of storage. Offered in stainless, aluminum, powder coated and bare galvanized (best value) it actually has a very clean and spare aesthetic of its own that transcends its utilitarian roots. But those roots still shine through, especially in their low-design content marketing! A few tiny photos on their web site show some cool installations, but its like they don't realize what they have - and I'm sure industrial sales dwarf cool interiors sales by far.

E-Z Shelving System

The shelves are available in many standard sizes, depth, and width, but the company also makes custom configurations. There is one essential modification that must be made in order to use the shelves in a vertical desk format. The basic shelf supports have are triangular, to make them strong, however this shape will interfere with a table rolling under the desk height surface. We took ours to a local metal shop and they notched them for us. No doubt this reduces the strength significantly, and voids your warrantee, but they are still way stronger than the job we are putting them too. Worst case scenario? I know they can hold 200lbs of architect reaching for the top shelf.

E-Z Shelving System

Our set up began with a 24" deep desk height surface, with the modified brackets. You can get them deeper. Like a 36" deep desk, knock yourself out. But with flat screen monitors and a good mobile table 24" is more than enough for a vertical desk set up. Next shelf up we have an 18" equipment shelf. This holds scanner, printers, hubs, routers, and associated manuals getting them off our desks. Above that we have two 12" deep book shelves, strong enough for anything you can throw at them. Ours have solid row of binders, books, and material samples, and our dead file boxes. At the end of our desk runs the desk height surface is replaced by 3 more 12" bookshelves creating a floor to ceiling shelf run.

and the populated shelving can be seen in our office.

metropol desk system by vitra

Metropol

Metropol is the desk system that was used in the previously posted SEI Headquarters here on workalicious. Its an advanced desk system that anticipates and accommodates technology. That sounds like a fancy claim for what looks like an ordinary desk, four legs, wood top - whats the deal with this?

There are 3 main features that separate Metropol from a plain old desk:

Number one: massive under desk tray. We are not just talking about a wire basket. This is a metal tray that is nearly the size of the desk top. Its big enough to handle the tangles of wires, as well as your router, or hub, the damn power bricks for all your accessories, usb hubs, and you could even fit a backup drive under there if it was a single drive enclosure. Easy in and out for wires means you cell phone charging station can plug in down there too.

Metropol

Number two: off desk utility rail. Do I like off desk rails or what? Metropol's is the best. There are a wide range of tools for the rail including a basic shelf, letter size in/out bins, larger trays, phone platforms, video display shelfs, task light mounts - in other words a way to get much of the loose crap off your desk to make way for the more transient work at hand.

Metropol

Number three: accessory surface interface. Metropol offers a range of accessory surfaces that link up to the main desk. This can be as substantial as a meeting table with power and data, or a small pivoting coffee tray to keep your spills away from your laptop. This lets you transform your desk from a single surface to a more effective work station.

h20 desks by bulo

H20 Desks by Bulo

Description from the Bulo site:

In 1994, Bulo invited the Antwerp-based architect duo Claire Bataille and Paul ibens to design a desk. The duo came up with H2O, a simple piece that can be configured in various ways. H2O is a timeless rendition of the classic worktable: a plain rectangular, adjustable top with an aluminum support. H2O equals transparency, timelessness and simplicity. The table can function equally well as a work, meeting or dining table and fits in both classic and modern interiors.

H20 Desks by Bulo

H2O HUB is developed in reponse to the ever increasing demand for work platforms.Table modules in different sizes can be used as stand-alone units or can be linked together. In that case the legs in the middle are replaced by a central support. A highly user friendly cable management and a series of shelves and screens allow the user to personalise its work space.

CB2 Graph Desk

Crate and Barrel 2 has this cool white desk with a definite "hey look at me, I'm desking on saw-horses" vibe to it. So if you can't bring yourself slum it with a hollow core door over a couple of hardware store saw-horses they have you covered right here.

CB2 Graph Desk

• Wood composite top with metal tubing legs
• Glossy white powdercoat finish
• Includes set of two drawers
• Wipe with soft, damp cloth

Love the hanging drawer box.

ultimate office online survey

The Ultimate Office Visionator

Orgatec is an office and facility conference held in Europe - Cologne is the venue this year. On their site they have an online "quiz" that takes your outlook on business and work, and your visual preferences and deduces what your ultimate office would be like. Apparently my own ultimate office would be "A functional houseboat in the creative economy!". Actually that sounds perfect - sign me up! Great fun - check it out.

herman miller for the home sense desk

Herman Miller Sense Desk

Herman Miller has always had a "for the home" division, but lately has rolled out some Work at Home products that are unique to the division. The Sense desk is one of a collection of desks with really interesting design.

Simple, intuitive design hits home. Sense features a spacious work surface, easy plug-n-play assembly and stylish, technical lines. Install the optional desktop storage cabinet for added workspace intelligence.

Its height adjustable and they say no tools are required for assembly. My favorite part, of course, is the cool off desk cabinet for stashing your desk top crap out of the way. And there is a great cable tray under the desk to tame your tangle of wires. They make a matching media cabinet too if you like an matching outfit.

Grain Edit's Odopod Studio Visit

The Grain Edit blog has brought us another fantastic studio visit to a great creative workspace: the Odopod Design Studio, again in Grain Edit's locale - San Francisco. I've only grabbed a few of the photos from their tour so make sure you click through to Grain Edit for the entire story.

You can see above that they have a bright, open, high ceilinged, former industrial space. I think it makes a great workplace.

Grain Edit's Odopod Studio Visit

The sharp eyes out there will recognize that they are desking on Vitra's Ad Hoc desks. The have put their desks together to form what I'm calling a "Big Table" layout. I'm seeing a lot of this arrangement and we are going to have to drill into that some more.

Grain Edit's Odopod Studio Visit

The desktops look like the Ad Hoc two piece variety that I mentioned in my previous post. That means at least they have had these desk tables for a while. They also appear to be using the old standby Herman Miller Aeron Chair.

Look at that! In studio bicycle parking. I love that!

before you buy new, look hard at used

Boomerang

A lot of the office furniture systems we've been looking at here can be expensive. And the manufacturers often are not set up to sell to small offices - oh they'll do it, but its clear the infrastructure capacity is built to handle up to thousands of workstations for big corporations. In most regions there are used/refurbished office furniture dealers who liquidate big offices when corporations go under or relocate offices. They clean, refinish, and prep stuff for resale, and the value is very good for a small office compared to buying new.

In my region we have such a dealer, Boomerang. Look around your own region before you buy.

the body shop's open workspace

Body Shop offices, Phila, PA

The offices of The Body Shop use traditional cubicals, but with a waist high partitions that only gives you desktop privacy. But the result is better daylight penetration, open office feel, and a sense of the volume of the space. I did not think I would like it but I do.

bush mobilitech computer desk

Bush Furniture Mobilitech

The unfortunately named Bush Furniture company makes this nifty vertical computer desk. Instead of the shelf part of the system being stacked above the desk height, the majority of it is below the desk in a cabinet. But it achieves the same result by anchoring all the wired components and equipment while leaving the desk free to move about. I like the small monitor shelf that laps over the desk top allowing you to approach the screen using your mobile table as a big keyboard tray.

National is owned by Kimball, a larger contract furniture manufacturer. National is a brand that you might see offered in staples or and office depot type store, so its is Kimball's way of tapping this part of the market. They make many different systems with different looks, but their WaveWorks line is unique as it offers castored legs to make mobile tables.

mobile tables, brew your own

Mockett table legs

We are almost at the end of Mobile Desk Week here at workalicious. I know many of you out there are not prepared to drop 5-600$ on a table with wheels. DIY has to be a big part of the audience here so where do you get table legs with wheels?

Mockett table legs

There are several sources. The photos above are from Doug Mockett. Besides making all kinds of great accessories for the desk they also sell table legs and castors in a variety of styles.

Outwater Plastics is another source for table leg parts.

And although the name is confused with the previous, Outwater Hardware is another.

And there are many more sources on the internet. Show us your favorites and I'll post them.
